All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Are you in control?

In Control Advanced Driver Training ( is a class open to drivers of all ages.  In addition to helping prevent accidents, by taking this class you may be eligible to receive a discount on your auto policy.  Using their cars, you will test antilock brakes, brake and swerve, test your reaction time and learn more about how cars and brakes operate.

Here is a list of things we learned while taking the class:

  1. Do not tailgate.  The faster you are going the more distance you need between you and the car in front of you.
  2. When is it a good time to back up? Answer: Never. Avoid backing up as much as possible.  Park your car so you can pull straight ahead when leaving.
  3. Airbags deploy at a rate of 250 mph.  Keep your hands positioned properly.
  4. You and your passengers must wear a seatbelt.  They help the driver maintain control of the car in an accident.
  5. Keeping an eye on the vehicles two or three cars ahead allows for longer reaction and fewer unexpected stops.
  6. Know if you car has ABS or non-ABS brakes and learn how to use them properly.  Always buy a car with ABS.
  7. If you need to avoid another auto or object, you should try to brake then swerve, if possible.
  8. SUVs are more likely to roll over.
  9. All wheel drive (AWD) may allow you to accelerate faster but doesn’t necessary allow you to brake faster.
  10. A person driving on insufficient sleep is the equivalent of a legally drunk driver.
  11. Talking or texting on your cell phone is a distraction, even if hands free.
  12. Braking distance required to stop increases exponentially if you speed.
